Talk: “Emotion of Sport”

This presentation discusses the importance of ‘Context’ within the representation of sports events and sports video games. Context and its relationship to audio, animation, presentation and environment will be explained and how they can convey a better story.

Speaker: Rick Stringfellow (Executive Art Director) has been working in computer graphics for close to 30 years now, during this time he has worked in TV, Film, and Games.

He started his career after graduating with a degree in Graphic Design from Bristol Polytechnic, UK.

The 1st graphics he produced were for a Channel 4 TV production and soon after he started work at the BBC in London where he built up the News and Current Affairs 3D graphics department.

In 1991 he moved to Vancouver, Canada and started working on animation software development at Vertigo and film productions with Disney in LA . In 1997 he helped create the opening sequence to the Sci-Fi movie ‘Contact’ and VFX work on ‘Starship Troopers’ while working at Sony Imageworks in LA.

In late 1997 he switched to the games industry starting at Radical Entertainment, and then moving to Electronic Arts as a Senior Art Director. During his time at EA Rick was responsible for art directing Need for Speed Underground and many of EA’s top selling sports titles. He is currently employed as an Executive Art Director for EA Sports working in both the Vancouver and Orlando studios.
